Lambchop
Merge, 2008
The songs of Lambchop are beautiful, quiet contemplations. Songwriter Kurt Wagner creates beautiful little sonic folk-rock pieces, reminiscent of the Byrds, if they were to have a pillow fight on the wave of a giant musical comedown. The guitars are perfectly balanced with the keys in a startling cool arrangement. I keep listening to “Slipped Dissolved and Loosed” and wondering if I myself could ever be that mellow. The lyrics are by and large hilarious, for example, what does this really mean: “Marched in a torchlight parade with a startling Tony Curtis” or “The cool silky stuff off your shirt remains over her seat.” Huh? The song “Stand Up” is an anthem of getting off one’s chair and doing different stands. Explain, Kurt, explain. I won’t let go of this album easily but when I do and it does make it up to the studio take a listen and tell me what you think. PLAY HIGH: 1, 2, 4, 8.
