About the World department
world music is all music
"There is so much incredible noise happening that
we’ll never exhaust it...There are times when you want
to be transported, to get your mind around some stuff
it never encountered before. And what if the thing
transporting you doesn't come from your neighborhood?"
- David Byrne

What we're playing
• Disney After Dark: Have you ever heard the Little Mermaid in Icelandic? Cinderella in Hebrew? The Lion King in Croatian? Jackie Chan? Well, we have, and they're awesome. That's why Disney After Dark is awesome. We play your favorite childhood Disney songs in languages you don't know. Thirty-five languages, three rockin' hosts, technological difficulties, and Whistle Stop, what more could you want?
• Do the Reggay is one hour of reggae music. Taking its name from a Toots and the Maytals song, the show focuses on early, roots, and dub reggae with sprinklings of rocksteady and, very occasionally, some dancehall. Special features include an original song followed by a dub version and reggae covers of familiar rock songs.
• From the Hermitage brings you a unique album every week, from any corner of the world, that is played in its entirety and serves as the centerpiece of the show. Whether checking out cross-cultural connections or diving deep into a specific genre of music, anything goes, from Brazilian airline music to foreign film soundtracks to German pop.
• GMT +8 presents one hour of Chinese-language music, ranging from chart-topping pop and fusion R&B to indie and traditional instrumental works---interspersed with Yyimei and Aly's random English-Chinese-Chinglish comments.
• Hot Off Di Press
• Intensive First Year Listening
• Oido al Tambor
• Rides as Horse combines catchy world music with story time! Every week we chat with a different Swattie who has lived or traveled outside the U.S. and have them play some of their favorite international songs. For most of the hour, though, we'll play some of our favorite world music,
including Bollywood, Celtic, Japanese pop, French, Finnish, flamenco, fado, Spanish love songs, and Gregorian chant.
• Tres Leches is a Latino/Latino-American music-based show with the multidimensionality of crossing dance styles, historical time periods, instrumental influences and national borders. Several of the genres in exploration will include Merengue, Bachata, Marinera, Peruvian Huayno, Paraguayan Harp, Chilean Folk with overarching Andean influences, Reggaeton, Spanish Pop-rock, and Spanish Waltz.
