About the Talk department
Fall 2008--Best Season. Ever!
"The Point After"
My show is "The Point After" and is a sports talk show. I'll primarily be covering professional football, basketball and hockey as well as college football and basketball. I'll be trying to stay away from some of the major biases in sports media, particularly the emphasis on New York and Boston teams. As of now I've been using correspondents from across the country and Canada as co-hosts of the show. I have one correspondent from Toronto, Ontario and another from Columbus, Ohio. "Mad Brokeback Radio"
On a recent trip to Cornell University, media scholar and known queer activist Diana Pozo discovered that the now-passé phrase, "that's so gay," has been replaced by the much more subtly homophobic, "that's mad brokeback.... yo." Amused, yet enraged that a fictitious geographical feature should be so harnessed in the name of evil, she set out to forge the one weapon that could reclaim her beloved Brokeback Mountain.... MAD BROKEBACK RADIO!
Offering a unique mix of serious discussion, lighthearted skits, and general mayhem, Mad Brokeback Radio brings you only the gayest in Saturday-night broadcasting. Queer culture on campus, intentional and unintentional homoeroticism and group therapy mix with a well-placed song or two to create a uniquely "brokeback" experience.
Mad Brokeback Radio: it's so gay. Saturday night at 8 on WSRN. Contact: dpozo1 [at] swarthmore.edu
"The Darfur Radio Project"
A monthly broadcast that seeks to change the way listeners think about and act towards the current conflict in Darfur. We feel that the mass media has largely oversimplified Darfur, providing partial and at times innacurate coverage of the region's ethical, political, and social complexities. Through political and economic analysis, the personal stories of those directly affected by the conflict, and explorations of the situation's various historical and social contexts, the Darfur Radio Project hopes to increase listeners' understandings of Darfur and to inspire them to meaningful action. SUNDAY--11:30 a.m.
"Gossip Girlz"
Our show, Gossip Girlz, grapples with the weighty issues of our time --both on and off the Swarthmore campus. We discuss this week's gossip, celebrity culture, and hold a weekly musical face-off between the hosts. Past themes include: fashion issues at the Emmys, this day in history and
famous birthdays. Contact: mspauld1 [at] swarthmore.edu
"Scissors and Swords"
Two hosts who barely know what they are doing spend an hour talking, breaking the awkward tension with random intervals of eclectic music. What do they talk about? Who the hell knows...but the results are amusingly bizarre. Contact: ablack1 [at] swarthmore.edu
